Rulers and guides have been a staple of professional design tools for decades — but the way you create them has always assumed you already know they exist. In Photoshop or Illustrator, you drag from the ruler strip. It's muscle memory for pros. For the marketers, small business owners, and enterprise teams that Adobe Express is built for, that affordance is invisible.

This project brought rulers and guides to Adobe Express — a long-requested feature — with a critical new layer: a discoverable interaction for adding and deleting guides that doesn't require prior knowledge of how professional tools work. The feature is now live, and users who have been waiting for it are happy.

The gap
Drag-from-ruler is intuitive to professionals but opaque to everyone else. Express users had been requesting guides for years with no way to get them.
The innovation
A new add-guide interaction that surfaces the action directly and clearly — no prior knowledge required. The same thinking was applied to deleting guides, closing the full loop.
Outcome
Feature shipped and live in Adobe Express. Positive reception from users, with continued development planned to expand functionality further.
